Neurodivergent Couples Counselling
When ADHD or Autism affects a relationship, ordinary relationship advice doesn't always fit.
Perhaps one or both of you are neurodivergent. Maybe you've recently discovered that ADHD or Autism is part of the picture.
You may love each other deeply but still find yourselves caught in the same misunderstandings, arguments or patterns.
I offer neuro-affirming couples counselling to help you understand what's happening between you, communicate more clearly and find ways of relating that work for both of you.
You don't need to have a diagnosis to ask for neurodivergent support. I regularly work with people who suspect they are neurodivergent and are either waiting for a diagnosis or have chosen not to pursue one.
You might recognise some of these patterns:
“Why don't we understand each other?”
“Why does my partner appear cold and find it difficult to respond in the way I need?”
“Why does one of us feel constantly criticised while the other feels ignored?”
“Why does one person want to talk immediately while the other needs space?”
“Why do we understand ADHD/Autism intellectually but still struggle with it in everyday life?”
This isn't about deciding who's right
I won't take sides or treat either partner as the problem.
Neurodivergence isn't something to be blamed for relationship difficulties and the aim isn't to make one person change to fit the other.
We'll look together at the patterns between you and consider what might help both of you feel more understood.
What does neuro-affirming couples counselling mean?
Neurodivergence isn't something that needs to be fixed.
Instead, we look at how each person's way of communicating, processing information, managing emotions and responding to the world can affect the relationship.
It's to help you understand each other's differences and find ways of relating that work for both of you.
Specialist training
I have undertaken specialist training in working with couples from The Berne Institute, including neurotypical and neurodivergent couples, alongside additional training in working with ADHD, Autism and neurodivergent couples through Aspire Autism Consultancy.
